  I've seen 40" plasmas at Home Depot for well under $1000 Canadian, about the same price I paid for a 27" CRT ten years ago. Also some surprisingly cheap sets at Walmart (I forget if they were LCD or plasma).

  If the brightness is going to be cranked up for daytime viewing, an LCD might be a better choice to avoid screen burn.

  Actually if you do a little shopping you will find that right now plasmas are less expensive than LCDs for a comparable size and brand.
