Traditionally, rabbit ears are small, portable "rabbit ears" that goes on top of TV's.The subject of the article are really proper, fixed, on-roof, over-the-air HD antennas, which are SWEETTTT! I highly recommend one to get all the HD programming you want over the air for free!
You don't need to build it or DIY, as pre-made HD antennas are pretty cheap, such as the fantastic Channel Master 4228 http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ANTENNAS/cm4228.html

Follow Ups:
both indoor "rabbit ears" and outdoor are discussed.

Good to see an article pointing to the fact that some broadacsters are compressing
HD quite heavily to try and squeeze as much as they can over limited bandwidth.
I find it bizzare that in the year 2007 OTA would be the best way to get a HD signal
into your home.

Is watching old "Avengers" and "Benny Hill" shows unpatriotic?
If anything, BBC America is dumbed down. It could be much better.
