I've had that trouble with the rare rental DVD that's all messed up with scratches, but not on any consistent basis as you've had.Hope it's not the player.

Thanks for the replies, come to think of it, it has been rental DVDs that are causing the problems. I have some of my own but can't remember if they're alright. I think they are.John.
