Need help on selecting receiver, center channel & surround speakers. I just purchased a Sony KV36xbr400 w/ a Sony S570D DVD. I have a pair of B&W 1600's and an AMC B!-20 Sub. The Denon AVR-3801 and Onkyo TX-DS787 are what I'm considering for the receiver. What ideas do you have?
Follow Ups:
Assuming you like your B&W 1600s, you might consider asking your B&W vendor what speakers would be a good tonal match, and then give them a listen. It could turn out that they have exactly what you want.Sorry -- I don't know much about Onkyo equipment. As for Denon, it has a pretty good reputation on this board. While I've never listened to the AVR-3801, I like my Denon AVR-3300.
You might want to check out audioreview.com to see what others think of these pieces.
As always, it's desirable to listen to components in your own home, with your other equipment. Better vendors loan out this stuff all the time, and when it works out, they deserve your business. It's more work, but it helps remove doubts about how well everything blends together.
Good luck!
Don't know much about the Denon AVR-3801 but the Onkyo TX-DS787 receiver is pretty impressive. Has been given the green light by George Lucas. Has an impressive power of 105 watts per channel which I doubt you will use. Make sure that the speakers you buy match this, otherwise you'll be replacing you woofers.Good luck
Just fyi...all a THX label "says" about a receiver/preamp is what it does under the hood; it's not a tool to measure build quality or reliability. The manufacturers pay a rather large royalty to Lucasfilm for rights to slap a THX label on their products...so in some cases, you might be getting an inexpensive THX machine. But they almost certainly had to cut corners somewhere to keep it at that price point and still have enough to pay the royalty to Lucas and make a profit. This post isn't meant to be a chastise; just wanted to clarify the THX story to those who are misinformed (as I was).
