I'm feeling a bit mislead by all the hoopla surrounding "Dolby Digital". It is being used for 2 channel release and just about anything (including mono) that has a Dolby wand waved near it. Careful scrutiny is needed to confirm it is 5.1 and not one of the other 5 varieties favoured with the Dolby logo. I guess it is too entrenched now but thought I'd have a moan - feel a bit better now!John
Follow Ups:
Not at all. The Dolby Digital specification allows for encoding from 1.0 channels (mono) all the way up to full discrete surround (5.1).The more channels, the higher the compression. It's all right there in the spec.
As for the cable company, if they have a DD decoder in the set top box, they are providing decoded DD output. Misleading, yes, inaccurate, unfortunately probably not.
Regards,
i absolutely agree. my local cable company is coming out with "dolby digital" cable. my question is how the hell it is dolby digital if there aren't any digital outputs?!!!!
My Cable Company Comcast has "digital cable", unfortunately even though there is a Dolby Digital sign on the front of the box(Motorola) there isn't a digital output,S or component video or even an analog 5.1 channel output, pretty misleading. As to J.C. Aussie's complaint about DD I agree, I was very disapointed with the Original Terminater movie in DD 1.0! What a bummer, at least the T2 movie was well done, if you like this kind of movie.

I actually got this digital cable with the "Dolby Digital" logo right on the front and... what... no digital output... how can this be. They are looking into getting terminals with S-Video and digital outputs. humm. I guess it's pro-logic for now.
