Does anyone know if it is possible to connect either the s-video or component video output from a dvd player to the 34-pin rgb input on an older tv/monitor? If it is possible to do will the picture be superior to the standard video input?
Follow Ups:
I do not think it will work because my KV25XBR has a 34 pin RGB imput and the service manual shows that RGB requires separate red green and blue imputs *plus* separate horizontal sync and vertical sync, for a total of five cables! I think composite has the H-sync and V-sync mixed with the red green and blue, and S-VHS doesn't separate the three colors from each other at all!In some cases it may be possible to find a true RGB + H-sync + V-sync signal inside the player.
Good luck

Whoops! I may be wrong here but if the blanking signal is not necessary, then 34 pin RGB may be compatible as it has composite sync input on pin 30!Sorry

Here are the pin assignments8 - Red Gnd
9 - Green Gnd
10 - Blue Gnd
12 - Blanking Gnd
13 - H-sync Gnd
15 - V-sync Gnd
25 - Red
26 - Green
27 - Blue
29 - Blanking imput
30 - H. sync or composite sync
31 - V. syncmars
I see no reason why your 34 pin input could not be used. Try Radio Shack for an adaptor. Otherwise, if you know the pin connections it would be relatively simple to make an adaptor. However, whether or not you will see an improvement is questionable. It depends a lot on the quality of circuitry, the age & size of the tube etc. If it has provision for component input then I guess the quality circuitry is there. Component input, particularly on enhanced DVDs can be stunning, and shows up brilliantly on big screens. However not all DVDs are high quality :-( so it can be chasing after moonbeams.
My suggestion is to give it a go as the cost will be minimal. Do not mess about with S-video if you have component capability, and do not waste dollars on expensive cabling.
Good luck
John
