5.1 analog bypass would be used when you were inputing(up to 6 channels)from a different proc/decoder and you wanted that signal to pass thru to the amp then to output(speakers) unaltered. The source had all ready preformed the D/A conversion.
just theory on my part....waitting to be corrected

  Direct and Analog bypass are often used interchangably.
