In Reply to: High-End DVD players, Toshiba 9200 vs. Arcam DV-88 ?? posted by audioman on March 29, 2001 at 17:02:11:
The Arcam is the only choice between a mass market Jap unit, and a fine piece of Arcam engineering. They engineered this player from the ground up, and it has gotten NOTHING but outstanding accolades. The Toshiba may be a good unit, but it can't be as good as the Arcam. The fact that it is heavier does not mean it is better quality. The Arcam is also fully upgradeable. I feel much better about Arcam.
The Jap's idea of quality control is to load a container full of DVD Players, and take one off to make sure the power light comes on. hehe

Well, this is certainly brilliant deductive reasoning. You've never seen the particular DVD player in question, and you already know everything about it. That's pretty amazing if you ask me.
This is the same mentality that says Sony can't make any High End products, yet few will argue that the SCD-1 and to a slightly lesser extent, the SCD-777ES are superb products.
This board is much better than Audio Review usually, this however is not one of those times.
Regards,
kotches: I can appreciate your comments here.
I would ask you, are you simply defending the position that Sony, etc. can build a fine product, or are you making this comment out of experience with both the Arcam and a Sony equivilant?. Please don't take this the wrong way, I am sincerely interested in your point of view. The other posters comments where likely substantiated on his own experience, or perhaps he just loves the Arcam cause he's got one!...that's fine, but can you perhaps offer an alternative rebuttal based on your experience with a Japanese product you feel to be as good or better...Again, I am not being smart here, I sincerely appreciate your input, it's people like yourself I can learn from
Audioman:My point was the idiocy of the post in question. It's fine to discuss a product you have experience with, but Hanta has no experience whatsoever with the Toshiba 9200 and still disregards it.
There is no question that the Arcam DV88 is an awfully good player. Having heard it, and the Toshiba 9200, I can tell you that the Toshiba (and its variants such as the Onkyo DV-S939) are also awfully good.
Again we're back to the totally indefensible statement that was made by Hanta.
Regards,
That was an indefensible statement. But I DID preface it with that disclaimer. You really shouldn't take things so seriously. I have an alleigance to Arcam, and I'd just prefer to buy Arcam over a brand that I can find at my local WAL-MART.Also, I really entertain myself much of the time with posts like that, and they are not meant to be taken so seriously. I will try to make a disclaimer with Giant Crayon Font next time, so you can more clearly understand that.

Hantra,I appreciate that you have brand prejudice. By the same token, you should bad mouth SACD players from Sony and Sharp since they also have mainstream products targetted at average consumers.
Of course the sheer idiocy of the statement is only confirmed by your admissions.
Post on, preferably at Audio Review, where commentary like this ond abounds.

Arcam product if IT WAS GIVEN TO ME!!! Right into the trash pile it would go, or maybe I'd sell it at www.junk.com!Of course I have no experience with Arcam products, but that didn't stop you, did it?
