I wonder what other movie buyers think. CD never dropped it prices though some rumours were in the air for years. So will DVD prices for movies grsdually rise as they become THE format? Or stay the same strange and incomprehensible mix of prices they are now? Or drop as the format really takes off?

Notice that DVD is not being positioned the way VHS was, with sky high "rental" prices on some movies, and 'sell-through' prices on others. Also BestBuy is selling most at several bucks off list, and the on-line stores discounting too. So? think the studios will RAISE / LOWER / or STAY THE SAME with pricing??? Just curious. (I think they will raise them within a year or so. Greed always wins out.)

1. Originals cost apprx US$23.00 per title.
2. Pirated versions of: US$2.00 per title!
A. newest cinema releases - Quality Equiv. to Good VHS Version.
B. DVD Quality new releases.
C. Cinema Qlty - filmed in cinemas, you'll hear 3D Voices, see
bopping up and down.etc.
(Maybe I can get a mail order online shop going!!!) Only joking... pirated versions may damage the speakers b/c the signal isnt clean.Overall , I think the DVD prices will fall, as the DVD production itself matures.
FYI, the original DVD price of Gladiators is US$25.00 (in H.K)
the original VCD price if Gladiators is US$7.00 Since they are both from the same company and should have the same royalty payments. Assuming on this, the cost of the DVD material should fall at least another US$10.00.
Just like with CDs, prices will go up. I purchased a DVD player in the summer of 1998 and for two years I was getting around 75% off the list price of most DVDs (e.g. I paid about $10 for most of my Criterions). Because of coupons and online deals, I built up a collection of about 200. During the last half of 2000, that all stopped. Online companies started to have to make a profit (damn them!), so the coupons disappeared and the prices went. In the last year, I've been buying "mainstream" DVDs at Best Buy where you can get about 20% off list price and more obscure titles from Amazon.com. Amazon's prices are almost at list now, but they do have an occasional coupon and have always given me excellent service.The fact is that while most studios have lowered the list price of their DVDs, the actual street price has skyrocketed. Would you rather have a $40 title for $10 or a $25 title for $20?
Hi: I agree that prices will likely increase, but I think the strange mix of prices will continue. Certainly for old movies the prices should be lower, the big companies have already made tons of profit off of them and most people would not pay $40 for a copy of "Run Silent, Run Deep" or "Rio Bravo." The risk the big studios face is that they may price themselves out of the market. DVD has taken off because the machines are cheap and most movies are not too expensive.
I've already seen the price on most movies in my area (Niagara Falls, Canada) jump within the last month by about $2 to $5 depending on the title!
I'm clamouring over to the previously viewed bins now! Never a title over $20Can., and they are in great shape- no skips or player freezing!

Down here Warners is about to introduce a 2 tier pricing policy, which sucks.To make matters worse , the sell throughs will also feature ugly labels on the cover slick and disc.

I agree with you, greed wins, look frward to price increases as DVD bites further into the luvrative VHS market.
