In Reply to: HDTV Digital to analog converters exist? posted by demented on November 13, 2001 at 10:47:34:
I had the same problem with cable myself. My solution was to get the Toshiba DST3000 STB & UHF antenna. I was able to pull in all 3 digital stations in Pittsburgh. My TV is HD so I also scored there.
Although you would not be able to connect thru component video(it passes 1080i only) you could connect with S-Video & recieve 480i digital signal. Some of the other STB's do pass 480i signal thru component video...check the Sony SATHD100. I watch programming thru both outputs. I use Monster3 S-Video interconnects & I must say the picture is great. So the simple answer to your question is yes you could "pull" in digital signal with an STB which converts it to an Analog signal.

Check out the Samsung...I think it can be had for around 400.00 if you look hard.
Kent,Would you say the digital signal converted to analog is a better signal then normal analog signal or cable analog signal? When I tried digital cable service it worked great but didn't carry local channels.
Thanks
Absolutely! It is the real deal...It is a pure digital picture with no noise or grain. Digital cable is fine on the upper channels but the lower ones are not changed. Even the upper channels suffer from lack of resolution.(flat looking) The satelite providers are compressing their digital signal which degrades some of thier pictures. OTA digital is as good as it gets. Even though you do not have HD you could upgrade all your local channels with OTA. That is providing they are transmitting digitally which they are mandated to do in the near future. It is not the analog signal that is the culprit...it is the source of the signal that degrades it. If you are able to pull in a signal & have a HD STB...you will improve your picture dramatically unless you are one of the lucky ones who already have a great cable picture.
Kent,Would you say the picture is so good, it justifies getting a component video out? For example my dvd player, moving from S-video to component was worth while ($20 in DIY cable). But it was only a slight difference in picture. Enough that I noticed, my wife didn't.
$600-$1000 dollars...I can hardly justify that to see local channels in converted digital format. It is only $20/month to get local channels on cable.
Figuring straight analog antenna is 1 out of 10
Cable is 6 out of 10
Digital signal is 8 out of 10
HDTV with digital is 10 out of 10Now if it was only around $300 that would pay for itself in a little over a year.
Does there exist an HDTV reciever for only UFH antenna's or all they all satillite recievers also?
