...my wife and I watched this fascinating film on DVD the other night and were pleasantly surprised. It raises questions about the nature of modern art - what qualifies, for example. There is some interesting discussion provided by the art critic for the New York Times.
But the actual story tackles the issue of a cute, 4 year old child artist/prodigy and the questions about whether she really created her paintings, which sold for an average of $10,000 each, herself or had help from her father.
Personally, I thought her dad was a little strange.
Recommended.

Seemed like a good Parent mentoring Child situation.
Society may be over emphasising the importance of prodigy, and forgetting that a lifetime of creativity outweights spectacle.
A family that loves and knows art together is a good thing, and needn't have anything to prove.

I watched this one last night -- I had it from Netflix.
It really is impossible to know conclusively from the film as they only show you want they want to. Even the Ocean DVD could have been edited before release.
I think the little girl had help -- significant help -- from the father. I'm not an expert on abstract art, but the quality of the pieces on the gallery walls vs the stuff the girl was doing in the video clips were not from the same hand.
Marla really had little brush control in the videos and the colors she was mixing were forming muddy grey tones. To keep the level of color purity displayed in many of the finished pieces would have been a big departure from what we saw her doing.
if the child did, in fact, paint the pictures - or did the father?
It sounds interesting...
