I know my Conan Doyle perfectly well.
I grew up with.
Now what did Ritchie with it.
A bit of digital haze, but not too much.
A few inventive camera works.
More or less inventive since Cosner Robin Hood.
He got an excellent Charlie Chaplin actor. And the rest was perfectly enjoyable.
Shake and a modern sauce poured over the whole, et voila you got a modern film.
Now did he fit in the spirit of the novels. Yes it did.
What is lush? Yes it was.
Was it boring.
No it was not.
Nicely done I would say, Ritchie.
I hope you got another one in this range.
Good show.
Follow Ups:
and the banter was occasionaly biting. The entire movie was summed up nicely in the end by Downey in a manner that reminded me of Sherlock Holmes. Rachel McAdams had some pluck and overall everything was nicely done. But I was bored. I actually stopped the movie half way thru because my mind was wandering and I finished it off a bit later.
Bottom line is that I was thinking about how they pieced the movie together instead of enjoying the film itself.

as I really like Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and Rocknrolla- Guy Ritchie can make a fine movie....always remembering of course that he also made at lest one really bad one (Swept Away). But reviews were tepid and it slipped out of the theaters. I will probably give it a try sooner or later.
I started watching it on HBO and had to change the channel. Nothing comes off worse than a spoiled star acting like a spoiled star.

...if you like that one, you'll love Sherlock.
...with all of the chases, fights and explosions.
Marginally entertaining popcorn movie.
The spirit of Doyle has been preserved.
That is much important.
brilliant rumination about this. Oh, yes, there is a soupcon but it is all subsumed to the ACTION genre. This is an ACTION film. Fights. Chases. Explosions.
Dialogue and character development? Negligible.
Actually, my first thought when viewing was that the leads should have been reversed. Law is a far more interesting, nuanced actor. And... he's British. I'm sick of hearing these awful attempts by American actors to mimic the British. God awful. They get the sound right but tempi is all wrong. It jangles.
But it stand on its own. And it is in the spirit of the creator.
That show the intelligence of the script.
And it was not boring. For an action film of today a compliment.
Just think of 2012. Now that was boring. At least this one was lush and had taken an earnest point for the set, very well made and authentic.
But I knew that you did not like it. And donīt get me wrong, it will never fill my videotheque.
One cannot forget this is Robert Downey, a clownish actor.
If one were unacquainted with Basil Rathmore, this film might be mildly amusing. Really, Patrick, did you find the fight with the giant in that warehouse the least bit amusing? Those fight scenes were fantastic, yes, but in the wrong movie.
Holmes was an intellectual: that is his soul. Downey? Hardly Eton material.....

Downey is a good actor even his best was and will remain his Chaplin.
Basil was ok but the series, shit.
Now I donīt pretend this film is good. I just pretend that it is a good trasposition of a MODERN Sherlock.
One that fit in our time. And one with excellent decors. Like it was back then.

so they're still dear to my heart.
Imagine Jeremy Irons.
Paul Rickman!
Now, Downey.....
See?
Childish.

Now the US Basil series is so bad, I canīt not tell how.
It has less to do with Doyle hero that Richtieīs film.
Now it you tell me, and you did, it is a part of your childwood then I keep quite.
But the best SH I ever saw is:

That's what I thought and was disappointed. My wife enjoyed it.
