The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and The Girl Who Played with Fire, both based on the first 2 of the 3 Stieg Larrson novels. Both filmed in Demmark (I think), both spoken in Danish with English subtitles, both released in 2009, shown here this year.

Both are contenders for the best film I've seen in a long time; subtitles never a problem.
I haven't read the books, but people I know that have say the films do not disappoint.
Tattoo is the best IMO, directed by Niels Oplev; the other directed by Daniel Alfredson. Both are semi-sequential, starring the same characters in evolving relationships.
These are strange, complex people caught in strange doings. Major big-name actresses wanted the lead role, but it went to an unknown, Rooney Mara. If you know anybody in these films, then you're ahead of the curve.
The 3rd movie, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest (based on 3rd and last novel), is scheduled for US release in October. I'll be in line.

To me it was a cheap exploitation tedious and silly piece, from the totally inept director.
It gave the new meaning to the "...and the kitchen sink" expression. Totally overloaded, disjointed and just plain boring...
I just flipped though them. Tons of adverbs and passive verbs. Looks like a real amateur translated them into English. Any thoughts anyone?

Agree that the translation was crude...or perhaps the original text in Swedish was crude...who knows?
I do know that I gave up a few night's sleep to read the trilogy...absolutely could not put them down! That being said, there are sections in all three books where the story drags...sometimes too political or just too much of this or that. But the arc of the story is very original and exciting. Very sorry the author died before he finished book 4.
The movies very skillfully pared down the storyline. I found myself admiring the adaptation even as I missed some of the true complexity of the books. Also, in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, they changed many details that seemed important to the development of the main characters in the books.

Dull... boring... cliche-ridden... uninvolving... just plain stupid?

Great reading but certainly translated in a half-assed way. I started on a Saturday and couldn't put them down until the Thursday I finished.
I did like the character and acting by the female lead. The rest was rigid and just grade B IMO.

After seeing Rapace's 2 films, I'm thinking somebody has a different interpretation of Salander in mind for the remakes. If so, then they should be hoping that English/US audiences haven't seen the originals.

Rapace and Nyqvist are in the Danish versions I posted about. English subtitles.
I unknowingly pulled names off of the web that will be in an upcoming English version of "Tattoo".
I had no idea such a deal was in the hopper, so thought the info was for what I saw.
The new one will star Mara and Daniel Craig.
