watch her endlessly in those beautiful gowns.
Franco is an idiot. Did he look once in her direction? He looked, most of the time, like he was imitating Jack's Joker grimace.
"Winter's Bone" got stiffed. Easily should have won Best Picture. Best Actress. Best Supporting Actor.
Rainman with a Stutter is a typical disability genre film. Very well done, hardly best film material. In a weak year, Firth deservedly won. Since many thought he should have last year, this is a typical Oscar move: make you earn it twice to show it isn't a fluke. Eisenberg did a fine job, too, and I thought it wouldn't have been remiss to reward the kid. But Firth deserves it more.
Portman? God awful. She just cannot speak, how can she be best anything acting? Seriously, just listen to her voice. She hasn't one. She croaks. No projection, enunciation.
Gwyneth Paltrow: a perfectly horrible performance (all the singing was horrendous, with the exception of Hathaway who also showed some dancing chops). An excellent example of how one can hit all the notes and be boring as wallpaper. No soul, no feeling. And she looked terrified (and terrible; pasty-faced and emaciated).
Scarlett?
I could have watched a lot more of her, too (ahem......).
Follow Ups:
They were a regular laugh riot -- a real Martin and Lewis, a Martin and Baldwin. She's a very talented singer. It's amazing that she can act as well as she can with that trite personality.
...although I thought it was the best American film of the year. Period.
don't expect the "best" movie of the year (whatever that is) to win "Best Picture", so I'm seldom disappointed and I just let it all go. My other personal favorite films of the year, such as Fish Tank and Animal Kingdom, were hardly likely to get a best pic nom, so all the attention Winter's Bone got by being nominated pleases me no end.
The King's Speech was a nice movie, I don't mind that it won. I was surprised Hooper won for Director, as the direction with actors is quite good but TKS is quite modest cinematically. I'm not a real fan of Black Swan, although there are elements of the movie I love, and one of the things that didn't grab me was Portman's performance.
The Oscars really are industry awards, and a popularity contest. As I say every year, Oscar is about film biz, not film art. Best not to get too wrapped up in it, enjoy the handicapping and the gowns.
On that last...better than usual I thought.
and Animal Kingdom is in my queue

wickedly funny. Winter's Bone was OK, but of the lot, my choice would've been Black Swan. James Franco was a pretty dull host, but he's a fine actor. Just saw him playing Allen Ginsberg in Howl. And 127 Hours is a showpiece of acting talent.
...by being wickedly mean and sarcastic.
More appopriate where people are sitting around tables drinking.
Not sure that would fly at the self-important Oscars...
Bear in mind that 90% of film sound is accomplished in post-pro, so there's no need for an actor to be able to do it live.
"Franco is an idiot." Kinda clunky in women's clothes too, I expect you noticed.
P.A.
the projection. She must be amazingly well-connected.
That is more that could be said for you and I... Patrick too... :(
Portman is nothing but a minor actress, cute at times, but with no depth or ability to express feelings. Such actors are abound. So there is simply an expectation gap - lower them and she is suddenly fine.
Now... as far as Patrick's cow girl Scarlett - I only caught a quick shot on a news, and that was awful enough.
I also caught Ann's singing - I am sure that was a sound track, but still, very nice.

She actually grimaced at the end. She's got a "hard" look to her these days. I don't think she has health problems, just aging, if a wee bit less gracefully than, say, Helen Mirren.
Hathaway was a surprisingly good co-host. Franco was just taking up space.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
I have never cringed so much at a manipulative psychopathic mother running her family of bad boys by treating them as children....oh, those lingering kisses. Yuch.
Notice the near silence when Hathaway referred to her lack of being nominated with her comment about "all you had to do was get naked"? I'm sure the writers weren't thinking of Halle Berry's Oscar performance at the time when she bared it with Billy Bob but the audience sure did.

was referring to. She was actually quite good.

Too bad the other people have been busy raising the plank in the meantime... but listen, Chloe Sevigni gave live blow job on screen - and still didn't win it... so the race is heating up.

Franco was a dufus. Sorta had a look on his face all night like a snooty little kid who feels like he's too good to play with even his own friends. The most bizarre thing was the complete absence of Tron from the effects category. That was a joke, right?

...everything was so predictable, there was nothing surprising or outlandish, the hosts were terrible and not very funny.
Even the gowns were pretty conservative.
Booorrrriiinngg.
When a disabled Kirk Douglas steals the show, you know you have big problems.
Someone suggested James Franco was doing performance art and that he really isn't that bad.
LOL!
most of what he was saying.
I was embarrassed for him.
What next? Wheel him in when he's completely disabled?
One thing this evening proved: Hollywood needs someone with class to come along, and soon. Grant, Newman, Steward, Pacino---- hell, ANYONE! First year I can remember Jack wasn't shown, too.... I hope the old fart's okay (must have been a Lakers home game or sumpin?).
Hollywood, I mean. It's been a dead corpse for many years.

Yes, the Academy Awards had an off year. While it went smoothly it was generally a boring affair. Poor choices for hosting combined with a fairly lackluster group of contenders is responsible.
What's needed is a charismatic host like Billy Crystal to step back in for a year or two and a better slate of films competing in all categories. This year is already looking up, but if you and patrick are determined to flaunt your Grey Poupon creds at every opportunity then nothing in the Oscar competitions will blow your skirts up.

Franco seemed to be trying to play a role. IMO he failed. One of the worst hosts I can recall. Not sure how he was chosen. Anne is very pretty, she was fairly entertaining. No big problem there.
But once the two singers performed it was too much (can't recall her name, but whoever was on b4 Gwyneth was almost as bad as her). Gwyneth should stay away from a mic.

I watched a LOT of naked Monica Bellucci instead.
Which one was more boring? Well, the Oscars I turned off right away... the crappy movie with Monica I watched till the end... suffering all the way... but still, you can say she's got the edge.
To be fair... after just five minutes she is getting too much.
The film - How Much Do You Love Me? - is better to be avoided, unless you are mr. grits.

My wife is in the fashion industry ...so she enjoys the show.
The hosting was weak, but Anne looked good ..as did Jennifer Lawrence and Mila Kunis, among others.
As for the awards, I think Colin Firth and Kings Speech were deserving. I was disappointed Hailee Steinfeld didn't win for best supporting actress. I enjoyed her performance much more than Melissa Leo's.
As for Natalie Portman, I've never heard anything bothersome in her voice. I thought she did a great job in Black Swan.
I'm no critic or student of film, I just know what I like and what I don't.
My biggest disappointment ...Dispicable Me wasn't even nominated. I really enjoyed that one.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
but no matter how Franco was on the broadcast his performance in 127 hours blew away Firth's in The King's Speech (and I thought Firth's performance was excellent) and he should have been the runaway winner of the award.
Stupidity is NOT a victimless crime.
I randomly watched a few minutes here and there, and about three of them were Randy Newman's wonderful performance. Usually the Hollywood score is about the most revolting part of the American movie scene, but this one was fresh!

Yeah... Randy Nemwan's pretty cool but I don't think any AA musical performance will ever top this...
Stupidity is NOT a victimless crime.
She's MUCH too self aware/conscious of herself (and seems little more than penny eye candy) yet seemed
like a barrel of fun compared to the blase Franco, who reflected the dullness of entire show (or what I saw of it).
What a snore that show was except for Kirk Douglas.
Good for "King's Speech" and all involved.
SJ sure looked fine walking away I gotta say.
