the media a lot and I think that segment of the American population could use a bit of exposure. Now, I DO have a major problem with Hollywood's portrayals of Italians. Invariably, they're Mafia-related. You don't think this has a carry-over effect to the general public? I similarly have issues with how the Irish are portrayed: has there been a film set in Boston since "Love Story" that didn't have characters both Irish and gangster?
In these particular instances, I fell victim to early reports of great performances in the key roles. Since both Spacey and Giamatti have done very good work in the past, I "bit."
And I got bit in the butt.
Regarding the ethnicity of films: I'd respectfully disagree; the large amount of control by one group has influenced the incredible number. Let's count how many Holocaust films appear this year. I don't think too many of them have been successful the past decade, but still they come rolling out. Perhaps that Daniel Craig film in the forest that twisted history so badly made some money. I don't know.
Anyhow, avoid the two films I mentioned. Poor writing, boring stories, completely forgettable performances.
Follow Ups:
I don't know why they make films that lose money - Jewish or otherwise. What I know is when I go to the On Demand, I see hundreds of titles I have never heard and most likely never will. The number of one-and-under one star films on Netflix is also amazing - I have only seen very few of them for the learning experience sake, and they left me dumbfounded - they are so bad they defy any logic - and yet someone put their money behind them!
Yes, many ethnic cliche' out there, some funny, some not, what to do about it? Subtlety and good humor are not exactly the words normally associated with American film production. So once they found the hammer that works, they keep using it. I somewhat agree on endless portrayal of Jewish weddings, usually shown as if no one has seen it yet - there should be more clever ways of doing it.
