I've mentioned here before my Dad was a B-17 pilot in WWII flying over 20 missions out of Italy so that film has a very special place in my heart for the window into a time he knew which it provides me.That's Dad in front second in from the right.

I'm not a tekkie.
He was stationed in Corsicana, Waco, St. Paul, and a very short time in Sherman (TX). He'd talk about the plane, but he didn't talk at all about the students. Many of them never returned.
The film is a good window into what these brave men had to go through.

from his flying those planes. I watched a video of a training exercise where the polot goes through the pre-take off check list in the cockpit. The number of details they had to recall and check before starting was formidable.
I got to see a B-17 take off and fly over me banking left right above at a local air show a few years ago. It was impressive and though Dad is gone it gave me another level of appreciation and admiration for him though he never really even talked about his flying much less boast.
A fine young man in that picture... hard to believe how young those boys really were, especially looking at today's i-generation.

before being inducted. The Government encouraged those already in College to finish though many still volunteered. Here you can read the student editor's essay from his yearbook. Its fascinating to read how they considered the sure prospect of going to War. Nott a hint of question or reluctance to accept the obligation. Imagine a draft today.

He ponied up for an extra $250 to have pictures of him taken in the co-pilots seat. No joke.
PS. The military is an excellent hearing killer.
