Found the widescreen DVD at my local library.
I hadn't seen it since the theater release in the mid 70s.
A real tour de force and the final scene was mesmerizing...
Follow Ups:
Hey, thanks for the tip. At first, I mistook it for 'Passenger 57' starring Wesley Snipes.
Btw. The final scene you mentioned seems like a homage to the opening scene in 'Touch of Evil' by Orsen Wells.
but it ain't, "The Passenger." And Jack's character is internalized. He's so powerful that he doesn't need to do much. He ALMOST crosses the line in "Chinatown" into caricature.
As much as I like the L'Avventura and some other his films. As far as Jack... he is totally unique, there's nobody else like him.

"...but it ain't,..."
But how do you know that?
"He ALMOST crosses the line in "Chinatown" into caricature."
Well, he has become his own caricature a long time ago. I still remember his performance in the movie 'Terror'.
You can't handle the truth.
Ah! So you get to decide what is 'truth'?
just quoting one of Jack's most hammy performance ("A Few Good Men").
I know a piece of music is superior to another--- or the same way I know ANY art works are ranked. I could get quite specific, but there's little point if one disagrees, one disagrees. If I say a late Beethoven quartet is better than another by Brahms, how could I convince you I'm "right?"
I would just say this: there is much about the human condition to think about after the Antonioni film and far less so after the Huston one. There also is a question of cinematography, ambient sound, acting realism.... but these are all arguable, aren't they?
Good reasoning. I personally didn't care too much for 'China Town'. I haven't seen 'The Passenger' yet, but based on your and others' description, seems like a superior film.

Well, I kinda agree. His performance in 'Shining' is far more enjoyable than most 'pretty boy' actors.
after "The Passenger" and is so much better playing it straight, "Passenger" is his greatest role as he has refined his craft as a serious actor up until that point; after that he slips into an exaggerated stance which is not only unfortunate but unnecessary...
GW
He plays only himself in all of the last decade.
...the opening and closing scenes.
He goes full circle and is a giant actor.
A bad film.
To say Jack is charismatic would be a huge understatement. He is one huge human magnet, and some naturally resent that magnetism.
There is great deal of him in each of his role... just like with any great actor. Guess what - they do not select a particular actor for role because that actor has no recognizable ID. So the phrase "playing himself" really has no meaning.

And yes it does mean something. Look at his last roles. Again and again the same mimic.
And that is fucking boring.
....I don't think he cares about 'acting' anymore, only 'performing'.
excellent.
Missouri Breaks, Cuckoo's Nest, A Few Good Men. And that was about it. Lots of good hammy comedic work over the years, but nothing really striking. But who cares? If he'd only done, The Passenger, I'd still rate him highly. It is a bravura performance. Astonishing. It created an icon; Jacks' performance, more than any others with the possible exception of Brando's in Last Tango, put flesh to the Bellows/Pinter/Mailer/Beckett/Burrough post-Modern Man.
