Oftentimes modern techniques and good equipment do not make better movies, and all that computer crap is nothing but piss poor substitute for bare knuckles.
The Mountain, a 1956 film starring Spencer Tracy and Robert Wagner drives this message home like an alpine hammer. I have seen quite a few mountain climber movies, including the obligatory latest crop, and I hate to tell ya - none of them had kept my ass on the edge of my comfortable sofa like watching Tracy make his desperate reach, his bloody and frozen fingers sticking to cold iron.
A dated film, to be sure, but with some very tense moments.

Also has some real climibing done by Clint himself.. may want to watch it alone as there is some brief Native American Female Noodity
...they may not have great old time actors or be in B & W to trigger your lust for nostalic films, but I'd say they compare favorably in terms of keeping you on the edge of your seat.
My two recommendations are Stallone's Cliffhanger and Eastwood's Eiger Sanction.
