I feel the same way. Blade runner, Outlands,and Alien were going to be the beginnings of a great art form (it apeared to be). It just never seemed to develop and nobody continued to make good sci fi. It seems the genre was morphed into action/horror. I would think Heinlin,Bradbury,Clark etc. were disapointed too.

To me, Dune will always be the ultimate sci fi book, and no screen treatment will ever do it justice.

Yes. "Dune" is like a derivative "Lawrence of Arabia", just more so.
Dune went beyond sci fi, politics or even religion. It mastered all of those genres and went beyond them. The way the "spice" was brought into the plot as a multifaceted symbol and impacted different peoples was a stroke of genius.
