Let's face it - the Downtown Abbey is just plain stupid, shallow and manipulative... and yet many of us like watching it - no big surprise there.

Many are sitting on the edge of their collective chair waiting for yet another season of that silliness... doing nothing... missing work, not mowing grass, letting their sex lives go stale.

Some probably already know the remedy, but for those who don't - The Grand is the better, much more entertaining one.

In reality, I think the Grand IS the better one of the pair, being less stupid. The coutresan side show is something sorely missing from the stodgy DA, and brings the element of real life excitement to the screen. The character interplay is more interesting, in my view, the butler has far stronger presence and it is just more fun overall.

No doubt about it - it IS a girlie show, but if you have to be present, then The Grand might make your suffering a bit more palatable.

        It is turning me into a junkie... I try to escape during the early evening and watch an episode - I have NEVER done that before. So yesterday I watched three episodes - I felt like grits!!!

        The first season is free with Netflix streaming, the second one is available streaming from Amazon - but you have to pay for it. I paid $29.99 for HD streaming, SD is $19.99.
        
        But in the meantime I also bought the original version.

        As Season 1 ends you will become restless, seeking another fix. I was lucky because I instantly switched to Amazon, but you have to ask yourself this question: do you want to subject yourself to that torture? :) Not knowing what's next for months is not nice.
        
        BTW - I could never understand how people watch shows like this in real time? I don't think I would be able to. I need to keep moving.

        Don't take me wrong - it is still a very fine movie making as far as TV series go, but it is a giant let down after the expectation set by Season 1.
        
        The first one was gradually building up the suspense, without resorting to much of your standard TV cliche fair. It mostly managed that.
        
        The second one apparently ran out of ideas, and had to become yet another "conspiracy" crappola story.
        
        I still enjoy watching the characters interplay, the councilman and his cohort, in particular... even though his recovery is nothing short of miraculous...I am willing to overlook that. But all that reservation bull is nothing but admission of a failure, of having ran out of good ideas.
        
        Still five episodes to go, and I think I know the final answer, but it is sad the second season is so full of holes.

        But I suspect the crappy plot lines were lifted from it.
        
        I have no problem at all with acting, directing, and production - it is all very high caliber. So I would not be surprised if the weakness was in the original material.
        
        Once the original arrived, I will be ready for it. Should be a couple of days.

  He is such a sucker for British accent - if he can understand more than one word in a sentence, he breaks the DVD.

      Clarity much improves, and I am able to get most of the dialog. Then it becomes my wife's turn to ask "What did she say?" - usually she hears better than I do.
