Saw it as a kid several times. Walter Pigeon, Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis. A fascinating concept with both an altruistic and a horror element.
I've read somewhere that a contemporary version is planned, but have no particulars.
Without Googling all over the place, has anybody read/heard anything about it? Who do I call to make it happen? I have "friends" in Detroit.

The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare. The Forbidden Planet was taken from that.

The Driver smiled when he lost the car in pursuit accelerating out of the S turn...
Anyone who has the rights to this could create A NEW 'STAR TREK' like franchise.Think of the money. Movies. TV shows. Comics books. Action figures. Posters. Soundtracks. Paperback books (did you know the 'Star Trek' franchise is the most profitable franchise in publishing history?).
Why whoever has the rights to this is not all over this is completely beyond me. Talk about missing an opportunity....

there is barely anything they have in common.
Seriously, have you SEEN 'Forbidden Planet'?
It's a 'Star Trek' episode.

Set design. Props.
The cautionary tale message from the film (beware monsters of the ID). Many ST episodes concluded with a similar moral.
Skimpy costumes on the one female in Forbidden Planet is seen time and again on Star Trek Episodes. No doubt a key component in the success for the TV series.

the original was pretty awful, though Rachel Welch was a grand eyeful.
A remake could greatly benefit from current technology.
Hell, they could FILM most of it IN someone's body.
Then make it 3D!

Though I do like the original. You just have to keep in mind when it was made.

couldn't, but I bet it will be done.
The FX also were unbeatable. In a large screen, with a good sound system, it's still magnificent.
Now Robby might be a problem...resurrect the original?

Burton... someone with some obvious intellect.
Wallach was a very good actor, but he never played an intellectual giant as far as I can remember.

... masterpiece, albeit with a twist: "Prometheus".
Not close enough - without "monsters from the id"?
Well, at least Prometheus did have its version of "Robbie the Robot" with David.
Recasting Forbidden Planet's Anne Francis might be a big hurdle.
We can dream.
I liked it almost as much as you, but .... damn ...
There's been rumors of a remake for years, but I haven't heard anything specific. Its a classic, let it be. There's a good chance a remake would ruin it.
Jack
...part of it's charm is the sci-fi kitsch of the era.
Couldn't be duplicated today.
