It is exactly what I think about that film, I will also add, that J. Wayne was so much in disgrace by the left, and particularly here in Europe, that even now when you speak his name, people stars at you and laugh about the poor US cowboy.
And yes he was a good man and a good actor.
And yes he was conservative.

John Wayne was a patriot and as such he supported his country, wright or wrong, He was no Stalin.
About 'Nam, Barbara Walters asked him about it some years afterward. He said it was a mistake.
It has its charm, but it is a wrecked film. Remember back then what a publicity it did get when it get out on the big screen.
