Were ape costumes used. I thought the human actors acted with special suits and green screen and the ape skins were added via CGI.

I had not checked into all the facets of makeup and such for this one. Most of the "suits" seemed a bit baggy. Perhaps they had been eating too many grits.

Ape suits were in the Three Stooges.
pictures of the actors during lunch breaks and what not, they were wearing ape masks/makeup. While Serkis' Ceasar and a couple of others may have been entirely or mostly CGI creations, not all were.

Animals eat right, get a lot of exercise, and don't drink or do drugs. As a result they are rarely fat or baggy. Maybe I'll see it again on Netflix and reappraise.
It was a pretty good entertainment--so it's not like the CGI ruined it for me.
...they are taking on human characteristics.
There were no ape costumes.
