first film starring Franco and Lithgow. This time around, zero stars: usually a bad indication of cost-cutting and placing quick profits above a riskier investment, "take the money and run--- look at the script!"
And, indeed, this showcases an embarrassment of writing. There may be a cliché unused, but I don't really think so.
I can sum it up, if you'd like.
Men: some bad, some good.
Apes: likewise.
Contrast this to "Snowpiercer" with its developed characters, clever action, intelligent views expressed in artistic and mature manner--- it's the difference between a cartoon (albeit one with fascinating artwork [Fx]) and a good painting.

A young guy at work asked me if i had seen this yet,I said no ,but asked him about the original POTA and he said he had never watched it,how is that possible?
I didn't see the "first" one with Franco et. al. Some people had recommended this to me and to my daughter. We saw it and it was awful. We each would have walked out if we had known how we each felt about it. Full of awful tropes and a complete re-enactment of the end of the Burton Batman movie which was seen a mile away. To paraphrase Caesar: Don't Gooooooooooooooooooo!
...it was too long and I was underwhelmed after all the critical praise.
To compare it to Dawn of the Apes is to compare a small indie film to a big budget production.
I enjoyed the Apes more - both had important messages.

...their eyes were pretty amazing.Serkis should be nominated for an Oscar.
Good film, more action than the first which was more unusual and original.

The ape costumes seemed to fit a lot better and the eyes were more communicative. Maybe the eyes had to do with the actors? But the masks all too often had permanent looks of anger or disdain instead of being neutral when need be. To me, that is a big part of film in the costuming of the apes.
In the first I remembered when Caesar showed the first spark of lucidity. It seems almost frightening. As for this one, the ape "Uncle Tom-ing" cracked me up immediately. I not sure most of audience actually caught on at first. (Don't let a monkey make a fool out of you.)
The action was great but, alas, the movie too long. This one may break the series due to the lack of costumes and script. But, it will depend on the summer audience and it may well exceed wild expectations.

"E burres stigano"
Were ape costumes used. I thought the human actors acted with special suits and green screen and the ape skins were added via CGI.

I had not checked into all the facets of makeup and such for this one. Most of the "suits" seemed a bit baggy. Perhaps they had been eating too many grits.
...were motion capture and CGI.
Ape suits were in the Three Stooges.
pictures of the actors during lunch breaks and what not, they were wearing ape masks/makeup. While Serkis' Ceasar and a couple of others may have been entirely or mostly CGI creations, not all were.

"E burres stigano"
Animals eat right, get a lot of exercise, and don't drink or do drugs. As a result they are rarely fat or baggy. Maybe I'll see it again on Netflix and reappraise.
It was a pretty good entertainment--so it's not like the CGI ruined it for me.
...they are taking on human characteristics.
There were no ape costumes.

Continues with a nice performance following excellent work in Lawless and Zero Dark Thirty. Gary Oldman didn't exactly suck not did Serkis.
I actually thought most of the movie was quite thoughtful and reflective and was relieved the writers didn't take the easy way out with an all battles all the time summer blockbuster storyline. *** out of ****

He was outstanding in Zero. Glad he updated his dentals from his early work.

"E burres stigano"
I don't think it was as good as the reviews would lead you to believe.
But it was quite epic, the 'Lawrence of Arabia' of talking ape movies.

...I may see it this weekend.
Those who compared it to the first say the first half of the film moves along much better than the first.
And they say Andy Serkis out performs many of the humans.
Where else can you see an ape riding a horse carrying a machine gun?
Sounds like a winner to me.
While I haven't seen Snowpiercer yet either (it's available on Comcast Demand) it looks like the superior film, even though a thinly veiled support for the Occupy Movement.
Not a great film but I liked it. I especially liked the look of the film.
-Wendell
...critics have said the battle scenes in particular are done very artfully.
