Just finished the second season, and it was grossly uneven, I thought. Some strong sequences, intermixed with total crap, but the ending... that started on a truly low note, managed to recover, to become almost great.
Not a show for weak-hearted, violent in the near extreme, with a few spots I would rather not see, but has some very good writing.
Overall I would say it is more interesting than the severely over-rated Breaking Bad.
Follow Ups:
If its a sitcom or single episode story line, they can last. But its rare to sustain excellence week to week if there is a continuing theme. Writers can't hang out a plot when they don't know if they'll be working beyond a 3-week window, or beyond that, a following season.
At best they incorporate a single episode plot with a longer development, so they can straddle that line.
The better series, be it The Killing, Spiral, Orange is the New Black, and The Following manage to keep the fire going.
In case of The Following they meandered more than I would like, especially in the second season, but still, the average level was very good.
Quite to the contrary, the one-shot deals, from the gruesome discovery to the conclusion in less than one hour, irritate me to no end, they tend to be so simplified that they become a joke.
At the VERY minimum you can have 90 minutes segments, like many British shows have, there you do have some room, but 45, 50 or so minutes is painfully inadequate.
Probably not your thing, but this is a scifi, post-apocalyptic scenario that's in its 5th season; partly directed or produced for tv by Spielberg. His reputation was thought to guarantee a winner, but this serial has wandered all over the map without any resemblance to a destination. Can't figure out nuthin'. It wanders between the scifi/survival aspects and standard soap intervals. I think its partly because producers can't tell if they will get continuance or not, and partly due to a lack of ideas.
I'm glad you found one you like.
I like it. The second season was weaker than the first. In my opinion, Breaking Bad was better.

The last one we watched the good guys would fight off the bad guys, get out of whatever jam they were in and find, you guessed it, more bad guys. This went on thru 3 iterations including the obligatory guy you thought was good being bad. I did think the acting was swell, I mean, they were all trying sooooo hard. But better than Breaking Bad? Not in the same ballpark. JMHO yada yada yada.

I think its writing is purely pathetic, but anyway, speaking of The Following - it is a "bag buys-good guys" show, with the limitations of the genre, however, within those limitations I think it does marvelous job.
One sign - if bad guys truly send your blood pressure up. There was nothing of that in BB, but here it happened often. And when the good guys took their revenge, you had an almost orgasmic experience - another mark of a successful script.
and skip all foreplay next time the wife is feeling frisky :)

With just 30 episodes it doesn't take too much time, but I can promise you a few late nights. I know I had some! :)
I watched that, the last half of this past season. Pretty creepy stuff....but addictive. As near as I can tell, the right people died....mostly.-Steve
