Based on his, I have done some reading on subject of soaps, and found great deal of interesting facts I did not know were there... so thank you, Patrick, you old goat!
It is big part of all cultures, like it or not, and there's great deal of good writing, performances, productions, plus just tons of good old fun!
I guess, everyone feels the need to play a grumpy old man now and then... truth is - I would say, there is about the same proportion of good stuff to garbage in soaps, as it is in films.
Reading Patrick's post one would be led to believe he only listens to Schubert, and never to Leonard Cohen! :)

Soap is-AGAIN- just made for a moment.
Has you ever tried to watch after a few years a soap? How many can you digest for a second time? That is all the difference there is between superficiality ( in the end, why not being dumb as seeing a film call dumb...) There is no depth nothing but an effeminate moment of nothing. In most of them.
As for the proportion, talking for in the now and then, yes. But not twenty years ago. Even the stars of today vanishes in some Instagram and what is left is no more glamour, secret but only infatuated egos. Also short, a lot of flatulence if you excuse the term...
Now let īus talk to Cohen....His religious approach and his citing from the Bible as tradition make his a man of profund knowledge pared with his " Monk " Phase not a superficial man. In fact in the end a better " Dylan " on the long run....
As for Schubert......
film can't help but automatically date itself and become irrelevant in most cases.
Change, change, change.
Show me the great directors of today.
It is common knowledge that the film industry by now just a money industry is.
And that is it.
...should have known for 50 years. :)
WOW! The movie industry is about making money! And here I was, thinking it was about making Patrick feel good! :)
Great directors of today? There are dozens.

It is you lacking of insight that makes you talk....I wonīt teach you without you sending me over a bucket full of $...
And please stay away from my wine cellar....If you know what I mean...
There are plenty of good directors, some great ones, working today. The percentage remains small, as always has been the case.
Next, you'll be saying French wines are in decline. Sacre bleu!
Boring boting boring...
Merde!
Mexico, Iran---- there are plenty of excellent films from those countries. Genius isn't restricted to a few countries.
Now I prefer watching film in my own culture as I had a much more greater range of understanding. Good films has an universal language of course, but most of the finesse as way of living, background of some of the handling and so on may escape oneself.
You loose a part of the fun.
That is all, old boy.
films. But I also enjoy the travel experience and seeing the varieties of norms from culture to culture.
I just couldn't say I prefer American and Brazilian films to any others. Ozu, Eisenstein, Tarr, Rohmer, Wenders, Murnau, Hitch--- they're as valuable to me as any from my culture(s).
Do you similarly prefer French authors?
To fully understand the meaning of a film or a book, it is impossible, even if the human basic needs are the same, emotions yes, but cultural background, difficult.
I love differences of cultures who vanish more and more every thing becoming just the same.
Of course I feel home with French culture grasping little sous - entendu who you as a Yankee never will.
And Europe has many common points, which Mexicans or Papua donīt.
are you meaning pre-Columbian Mexico?
I tried to say that every country has its own culture. Which remain an unknown for some one not raised into it.
We grew up reading the American, French, German etc authors, watching their movies, listening to their music. As result, when we came here - a huge transition, you might say - we discovered very few surprises.

You read French and you think you know french culture....Can you even speak french?
One can easily know the French culture better than many Frenchmen, all without knowing the language.
Now... the Russians are a totally different ballgame... they are far more subtle and sophisticated.

What is baguette? If you can answer that question straight away without Googling you won.
You mean - you still don't know?
BTW - same word in Russian.

A la recherche du temps..
I think you simply forgot how closely intertwined the two cultures once were.
Even the overpowering smell of sweat is a common element! :)
![]()
It, well it was sardonic, but I agree at how our two cultures were close. And with Poland too!
Plus my TV has 20 times more contrast than yours... :(
And Polish... when your Emperor was running home, leaving his army to die of cold and hunger, he had a detachment of Polish lancers with him as guard.
For some reason his own troops were no longer good enough.

In the end my dick will always be workier, longer agile & than yours.
You can shoot how many time you want with your rifle that never will be a compensation.
***In the end my dick will always be workier,
No good without pictures.

How much support them in the USA?
8% in UK, 2% in Germany... no numbers for US.16% is STAGGERING. Try to get into THAT mindset.
The French even beat the Gazans!!!
Edits: 08/28/14
The Gazans? No wonder they hate them...And in a poll will every one says what he think? Anyway we has in France a lot of Arabs that is the direct result....Now no one in the USA? How many Muslim you do has there?
***Now no one in the USA? How many Muslim you do has there?.8%
BTW - there are only 7.5% Muslims in France, so that doesn't come close to 16% - so you have lotsa 'xplaining to do, Mister!

Carlos Sorin is a wonderful director.
I think Russia is also just in part a European country.

s
He is still in the Cinema Paradiso times, in smoke-filled room with a noisy projector.
Someone needs to tell him the times are changing, and therefore the nature of the entertainment with it.
Need we remind him of things like old radio shows? He would probably like some Helen Trump... :)

No , but Orson maybe?
As if junk did not co-exist side-by-side with Bergman. I guess you were asleep all through the sixties... never heard of TV series like Dr. Who, Outer Limits, and countless others.
The other day I stumbled over Lawrence Welk. :) How do you like your polka?
Are we dumber today than we were say, fifty years ago? Some of us are... I am sure! :)

twenty years ago, how many soap where only on TV,( and not now massively like nowadays on Video) guess you can count up to five, donīt you....And no they where not countless.
Now it is pandemic.
My impression after coming here was the silly shows everywhere. Every day, on every channel.
Are there more of them today? Sure, because THERE ARE MORE CHANNELS.
BUT... each channel already had as many as they could possibly fit in. And a person can't possibly watch them more than 24 hours a day - not then... not now. So there is really no difference at all.
The real question is, however - why does that concern you? Are you incapable of making your own choices, always giving in to temptation?
If you are capable of separating a $10 bottle from a $1.98 one, you should be able to select what to watch... even without my help.
Grow up and stop whining... let me be your guide! :)

Stop to snake around: How much soaps today and how much twenty years ago.
I donīt want to knows the reasons ( more channels, more programs, more idiots. )
Just the plain and true numbers.
Be the light may be with you.....
I guess my point that if you can only physically watch ten of them a day, then whether there are 100 or 1000 out there, makes no difference, was too much for you.
You are throwing a silly tantrum over nothing. The world is not marching to the tune you like? Get over it. It's not like you have already seen all the good movies.
The funniest part, however, is the fact that you watch plenty of soaps yourself... you just have the sudden uncontrollable urge to be holier than thou! :)
![]()
Plenty? Not 1/5 as you. In fact very few. And then of quality like Sherlock Holmes......
Man, that is a total garbage show! You have that propensity for carefully selecting junk out of pile of good stuff! I had to tie my wife to make her finish two episodes of that ridiculous spectacle!
But how funny is it you complaining about too many of them! Just stop watching garbage!!!! It is so simple! Even you can do it!!!
