Mexico, Iran---- there are plenty of excellent films from those countries. Genius isn't restricted to a few countries.

Now I prefer watching film in my own culture as I had a much more greater range of understanding. Good films has an universal language of course, but most of the finesse as way of living, background of some of the handling and so on may escape oneself.

You loose a part of the fun.

  I just couldn't say I prefer American and Brazilian films to any others. Ozu, Eisenstein, Tarr, Rohmer, Wenders, Murnau, Hitch--- they're as valuable to me as any from my culture(s).

    To fully understand the meaning of a film or a book, it is impossible, even if the human basic needs are the same, emotions yes, but cultural background, difficult.
    
    I love differences of cultures who vanish more and more every thing becoming just the same.
    Of course I feel home with French culture grasping little sous - entendu who you as a Yankee never will.
    
    And Europe has many common points, which Mexicans or Papua don�t.

        I tried to say that every country has its own culture. Which remain an unknown for some one not raised into it.

        One can easily know the French culture better than many Frenchmen, all without knowing the language.
        
        Now... the Russians are a totally different ballgame... they are far more subtle and sophisticated.
