know about that. Take Michael Haneke, arguably the most celebrated recent German director. His latest film, "Amour" is an emotional roller-coaster, a 3-hankie film. I know you'd disagree, but "The White Ribbon" also has quite a lot of "soul:" the loving relationship of the teacher w/the shy young woman (her parents are terrifically portrayed, too); the violent, though well-meaning, father.
And how does one lump together such directors:
Wenders
Schlondorff
Fassbinder
Herzog
Ophuls
Pabst
Edel
Wilder
von Sternberg
Lang
Petersen
Murnau
Staudte?
Something for everyone in that list.
"Run, Lola Run!"
"Downfall"
"The Baader-Meinhoff Complex"
And many, many other modern German films I found not one bit "cold."
Anyhow, to each his own...

The White ribbon you saw?
Well, what can I say? It is a personal impression, but a strong one.
I might go even further and say that I in general do not like German culture - its architecture, music, literature and cinema. I realize the greatness of some of it, but also see its roots which I don't like. Does Holocaust have something to do with it? Perhaps, and if it does, it is also a reality.

against the Native-Americans? The equally long history of slavery?
The Chinese purges?
The Japanese invasions of China and Korea and the attack on Pearl Harbor leading to so many US deaths?
But yes, I strongly dislike the Russian culture for what it did back then, and for what it is doing now.
We are not talking about the Russians, however. We all are free to have particular reservations. You can definitely have yours.

bestiality.

But American markets only get a limited number--- and Haneke is the most well-known to the art film crowd, these days.
That sinister smile of a Gestapo officer.

Tarr on my Kuro is dark hole, indeed.
I would more readily use that term with respect to the Russian ones.

Generally showing little or no emotions.
Dark has more to do with the subject matter, full of the sense of glum... but usually portrayed the strong emotions... for instance, that film, Siberia, Monamour, is very dark, there is very little hope for anyone in it... but the emotions run strong.

Russian, alas, isn't up to it…
I am actually quite sorry it is not made move accessible, it is a good film.
