"Ipcress File," "Funeral in Berlin," "Billion Dollar Brain:" a trio of films all based on Len Deighton's pretty good spy series.
"Billion Dollar Brain is a 1967 British espionage film directed by Ken Russell and based on the novel of the same name by Len Deighton. The film features Michael Caine as secret agent Harry Palmer, the anti-hero protagonist. The "brain" of the title is a sophisticated computer[2] with which an ultra-right-wing organisation controls its worldwide anti-Soviet spy network.
Billion Dollar Brain is the third of the Harry Palmer film series, preceded by The Ipcress File (1965) and Funeral in Berlin (1966). It is the only film in which Ken Russell worked as a mainstream 'director-for-hire', and the last film to feature actress Françoise Dorléac.
A fourth film in the series, an adaptation of Horse Under Water, also to be released by United Artists, was tentatively planned[3] but never made. However, Caine played Palmer in two later films, Bullet to Beijing and Midnight in Saint Petersburg."

Follow Ups:
IME, Michael Caine does not make a bad film.
They don't make 'em like that any more. Thank God. I've seen more complex plots in a Road Runner cartoon.
I liked Caine, and I'm sure his rakish portrayal of Harry Palmer was quite the anti-hero in 1965. The rest of the movie was horrible.
I haven't seen it since 1965. It sucked then. Perhaps it has gotten better with age or my tastes have changed in the intervening 49 years.

the MTV generation cannot grasp a movie where things don't happen every three minutes.

Poor plot. Poor pacing. Bad editing. Ridiculous ending.
"Shot him."
"No, shoot him."
Bang!
The inane Bond movies of the era were infinitely better. If you think this movie somehow portrayed espionage of the era as anything close to reality, then you're a complete idiot.
Ah, the abusive ad hominem. First choice of people who cannot win their argument with facts.
Go watch a Miley Cyrus video.

thanks
I downloaded it using BitTorrent (see the link below). I'm downloading Funeral in Berlin and Billion Dollar Brain right now.
...
consider it after panning the first?
I'd honestly be surprised if they were any worse. Different? Ok. Bad? Sure. Worse? Doubtful.
Heard of Ipcress File, not the others. Never seen any but was never much of a fan of Caine.
His name being Harry Palmer; assuming it's a comedy?
Not a comedy.
The first one is a straight up spy story. Realistic - not like the Bond films at all. Harry is an underpaid civil servant who is basically blackmailed into being a spy.

Hm, sounds interesting, and heard nothing but good things. One day.
The name though, somebody had a sense of humor.
...Ipcress File is one of my all time favorites - kind of a more modern Manchurian Candidate.Made me really appreciate Michael Caine.
Not sure if I saw the other two.

First movie, 'The Ipcress File' was great.Second movie - so-so.
Third movie - absolutely awful.
Never heard of the two direct-to-video movies. Unfortunately Netflix doesn't have them. A pity, I'm curious to see them.
