Denzel's characterization. He was a heavily traumatized black ops guy. Showing little emotion is called the "flattened effect". His rituals and OCD is also a major symptom of serious trauma. I notice how he hung his lip twice during action and wondered if he was conveying Bell's Palsy which can cause droop of the mouth as well as a myriad of other facial symptoms.

I believe he was "into" his role so far that critics haven't recognized what he was doing.
I preferred A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES to this and the fight in the store was downright silly - PhilJ 13:28:30 10/14/14 (0)
people just lined up for him to kill though out the entire movie
