Bob Thornton.
This character really doesn't deserve the title. And Murray looks really bad, physically. I don't think he put on all those pounds for this role; he needs a personal trainer or he ain't gonna make a lot more of nuthin.'
Melissa McCarthy shows she has a lot of depth; she plays a serious character and invests her with dignity and individuality.
SPOILER:
The takeaway from the film is that people will love you if you're an asshole to everyone--- as long as you're a decorated Vietnam vet and your wife has a serious illness.
It ain't so.
Follow Ups:
with a good person behind it. The title is fully explained at the end and, yes, it does fit.
McCarthy didn't show so much depth as the fact she doesn't have to do outrageous comedy non-stop. Murray was good in this somewhat "real" story compared to all the other vehicles he has mugged and wisecracked through.
It took me decades to begin to like Murray. I recall when he first started SNL he had this perpetual smirk during sketches that reminded me of grade school kids thinking they're cute during skits. I actually thought he wasn't going to make it. Took him about three seasons to get over that. He wasn't ready for FDR but he IS ready for this role anytime.
...after his first couple of shows, saying he was the new kid and he was really trying so give him a chance.
It was off the wall and perfect - I've liked him ever since.
...that seemed to me to be the perfect use for his skills. He didn't have to stretch to play a sardonic quipster. He had charm and you didn't need to see inside him. He wasn't the center of the movie, but he did kind of play the muse, or greek chorus. Too much Murray in a film kind of depresses me. I remember "Razor's Edge" as a turning point in his trajectory to whether he would be a great actor or great star. I don't think he's either. But he's no slouch. I see him as a great 2nd banana. Like Hope to Crosby. Just my windy opinion.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Laughing...
Billy Bob is nasty.
Loved BM in 'Lost in Translation'
...he's replaced Jack Nicholson in those roles because Jack is too old.Remember "As Good as it Gets"?

I think that generally the best comics transition to drama better than the other way 'round.
Also, not all roles are 'oscar material'. Actors like WORK.
Sandra Bullock received both Razzie AND an Oscar in the same week!
Too much is never enough

As the rule, the American comedies are of very low caliber, the humor often is either adolescent, or just plain dumb.
With very few notable exceptions. But you can kick me now... I am your devoted messenger! :)

American comedies are adolescent, juvenile, puerile, or whatever you prefer. But a film like Murray's "Groundhog Day" wasn't. Nor was the bittersweet, "Lost in Translation." Or the Jarmusch one, though I'm not a fan of that director.
Anyhow, like anything else in art, it's subjective. I like his persona, you don't. Big wheel keeps on turnin.'
Groundhog Day is not bad, I never said it was, but he is pretty plain in there, his acting uninspiring. The Lost in Translation is pure speculation - allegedly every man's last dream, which it isn't... it is akin to showing a cute child or a dog - you are guaranteed a passing grade. It is really Scarlett's movie, he is playing a supporting role, and he is OK, but not more that that.
BTW, if you recall the treadmill scene, this is what I am talking about - the worst kind of cheap and silly American comedy.

American Movie.
I'll never know.
Bill Murray is Unique.
And It takes guts to be old and in close-up, man or woman.
I never get tired of Ghost Busters, BTW!
At least he was still recognizable. Unlike Harvey Keitel.
