Today was my first exposure to Atmos. One my favortie theaters is finally converting it screens and I must say it is impressive. The Dolby promo leading into the movie really shows what it can do. The 360 thing is good and it seems to be properly done. I'm not sure what had to be done to upgrade the sound system but the addition of a hundred subwoofers must have been necessary. Nice, clean, tight subwoofers.
Anybody got an idea of what an upgrade entails in a theater?

when I saw movies in a Community College Media Lab Theater. I entered in the dark. When they turned the lights on, they had these HUMONGOUS loudspeakers to the side of the screen. Back in 1980s, I don't know what format they were using, but LARGE loudspeakers compared to SMALL loudspeakers, seemed to work very well.
Well for one- in order for the multiple speakers to be able to deliver a coherent soundscape, the theater must be a sonic black hole - so that the sound track can define/present the sound completely with out the reflections and canceling nodes that a multi speaker system is prone to...

...I think the XD theater I saw Reacher in today has Atmos.
During the previews I noticed too much sound coming from above, especially during the Rogue One preview.
I didn't notice it during the film but thought about it at the end and noticed the music was mostly coming from above front.
it is a nightmare--for me. I mean, I cannot get far enough away from the screen to enjoy the picture. I won't pay extra to have my sense soiled in such a manner. 8^)
...here you go.
