RE: "But what was the Black Goo?" It symbolizes technology and empiricism

I agree that the map showed Earth and I even agree that Earth was probably the destination of the last Engineer. However, it all comes down to what the black goo actually is as to whether the Engineer was on a mission to destroy Earth or not. The black goo that we saw in the beginning scene transformed the sacrificial being into something else that jump started the evolution process on the planet. The black goo actied as a catalyst or agent for change in the DNA of the planet's inhabitants. A change for the BETTER. So it is probably not correct that the Last Engineer was headed to Earth to DESTROY it, rather to produce a change for the better. Recall the last time the Engineers were about to go to Earth with canisters of black goo was around 2000 years ago, a time of great turmoil on Earth, a time in the evolution of mankind that cried out for some sort of change to the evolutionary path. The time, actually when Christ appeared on Earth. But as Ridley Scott opined that connection, the one between the Engineer and Christ, is too on the money.
