RE: "But what was the Black Goo?" It symbolizes technology and empiricism

I interpreted the sacrifice in the first scene as the credits roll to be a punishment for that particular engineer who established life on Earth against the will of his people.

As I've said, the black goo ultimately represents technology. The engineers represent Prometheus in the Greek myth. They were not supposed to give life or knowledge to humans and they were punished for it. They also came to regard humans with regret for a variety of fairly obvious reasons best manifest when the surviving engineer comes to the realization that humans are now creating their own inventions (whereupon the engineer rips off the head of David and lifts off in his ship to do what he meant to do 2000 years earlier).
