On "Upconverting"...just how "Near HD Quality" do these players get????

All of these ads for upconverting dvd players state "near HD quality"; I have a Samsung 50" plasma(720 resolution) which has a terrific pix, even with standard dvd, but my Samsung player doesn't upconvert. Thinking about buying one that does(have no interest in HD players until the format issue is settled, if ever)...but wondering how much of a difference in quality will I see? An Oppo, for instance, as I'm sure not all upconverting units are not the same.
