Your Samsung DVD player may not upconvert but your 720p TV does, and it does it automatically if you feed it a standard definition signal. That means you're already watching your standard DVDs, and standard definition TV broadcasts also, upconverted to 720p. If you get an upconverting DVD player and it has a better upconversion chip than your TV, you may see a slight improvement. If it has a worse upconversion chip than your TV and you use the player to do the upconversion your picture quality may actually get worse.

That means the short answer to your question is that you will see little difference since what you're watching is already upconverted. Depending on the quality of the player, an upconverting player may give you a slight increase or decrease in picture quality.
