Home Video Asylum

TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Home Theater systems and more.

I used to get this with my Phillips 34" CRT using "PixelPlus"

It was Phillip's up-rez solution for coping with standard def. It made everything sharper, but it also tended to make film-based source material look like video - very good video but not very "film-like". It was great for watching cable, and I got used to it, but I always turned it off for DVD watching.

I have a hard time describing this effect, which was like the LCD/LED PQ you see now for all source material. Cartoonlike doesn't quite get it - I didn't have my Phillips set to torch mode. Video seems hard and "of this world". Film seems smoother and more "of another world".

But I definitely notice "it", whatever "it" is - just one more reason of several I prefer plasmas for watching movies.
