It tends to get used by folks who prefer the old style kung-fu movies.
Actually there isn't that much wire(relatively) in flying daggers-not nearly as much as in Croutching tiger, Hero or Iron Monkey.
Fantasy Kung-fu is also called Wuxia, if I understand it correctly.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but “Wire Fu” lets me know what to expect. The wire assisted movements used to bother me as being so unnatural. After more exposure to it, I am able to appreciate its use as creative license to demonstrate strength and agility.

The wireworks are similar in vein to SG effects, except mechanical as opposed to digital. Both are effective considering their specific purposes.
