But I remember being fascinated by his portrayal of life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Cincinnati bootlegger George Remus said that there were not enough dollars in the money supply to pay every corrupt official who wanted a bribe.
I doubt it's much different today.
But I found the latter to be depressing. Same goes for Vietnam which brought back many bad memories for me.
I enjoyed the first part of Reconstruction, and am very much looking forward to the second.
