I just found this older series on Amazon. I am working on the first year and I find it very well done. It focuses on a group of WWII marine soldiers which is dwindling in numbers as the episoded go by. Very gritty battle scenes. Produced by Spielberg and Tom Hanks who also did Band of Brothers.
Follow Ups:
there is one hellava horrific scene that will stick with you. It's one of those: "this really couldn't have happened" when it really did/does.
Yes. Major battle scenes throughout the series. Very graphic. I was impressed with the script dealing with the battles when new guys asked what it was like. The vets couldn't or didn't want to go there and in one instance the vet told the new guy you will be OK. How could you verbalize what they had been through. Seeing friends blown to bits and fighting hand to hand in some cases.

Totally agree. And the characters being played I believe were actual soldiers.
Not sure about real soldiers. Reme Mallack played a weird one in a couple episodes. That would have been when he was a relative unknown. I especially liked how they depicted young men similar to locker room type talk and macho behavior.
