Very much enjoyed this film last night. Disc for Netflix. It is a very dramatic and realistic look at Vincent Van Gogh and the periods of insanity that he suffered. Willem Dafoe did a masterful job of recreating Vincent's look and portraying the mental state of the man. I have a degree in fine and applied arts so my interest and knowledge of Vincent might have flavored how much I liked this one.
Follow Ups:
but Gaugin. I'm surprised how he was depicted as so sensitive with a care-taking brother watching over him. He was like a walking flower.
Try 'Rodin' with Vincent Lindon for another good artiste biopic.
I was also surprised at the softer, gentler Gaugin. They were known to have had physical confrontations. I have always seen him portrayed as a high strung emotional character.
I thought the relationship between Vincent and Theo was more accurate. Theo took care of his brother faithfully for many years.
I have Rodin on my list at Netflix.
