Probably the best acting Pitt has done. He has really matured and handled his emotions well. This is set in the "near future" and involves a mission to discover the source of Earth damaging EMPs. Oh, it also happens that Pitt's dad, Tommy Lee, was on a Deep Space mission that never came back.
The story gives us a more emotionless world with Pitt being a prime example. It also shows the Moon and Mars as commercial truck-stops for outbound missions. Yes, the CGI was great but not overpowering. The direction made this more of a "personal" movie rather than a spectacle.
The story and action parallel a famous movie from the '70s. You'll get it in no time.
Follow Ups:
I only stayed awake in the hopes something would happen. The did have a killer monkey. That's about it.

A shout out to Joseph Conrad (and Mad Max). I would disagree on the best acting a bit. Liked his over the top in Seven Monkeys and Fight Club, but it was good to see him doing his work on the Brangelina breakup.
Visuals were beautiful and my wife stayed awake the whole movie!
I'm glad I went. Fewer and fewer movies I'm even interested in watching at home any more, let alone going to a theater. I was pleased to see that they have converted to reclining movie chairs and reserved seats at our local theater. A very sweet ride.
Warm regards!
I saw this as 2001 + Apocalypse Now directed by Terrence Malick. Pitt's narration I attribute to Malick. Of course, we have a Kubrick universe with a plot straight from Heart of Darkness,
For a fully homogenized film, it was good.
...this was a beautifully produced and decently cast and acted mashup of "2001" and "Apocalypse Now" with some bits of "Alien", Clooney "Solaris" and "Bladerunner 2049" thrown in as seasoning. Not sure I cared for what seemed to be its message that we are it in this part of the universe. Regardless, worth a visit to the cineplex.

I plan on checking it out. I had hoped for unanimous reviews, but that''s life. I am sure the crew of the film had somewhat the same hopes. Critics, well the last time I listened to them , i wound on watching "hustlers" Dang it.
Tympani roll please, while I unspool my reasons to look forward to the show.
!. Big budget, big effects space movie, with a trailer that suggests seeing it on a large screen, is usually enough motivation for me, and is so here.
2. Brad Pitt is a big star, so can select among the best roles in the industry. I don't follow actors, but he is a good one, and I haven't ever seen him in a bad movie, but did skip his sword and sandal trojan war one. Critics helped me greatly on that decision. It is almost like a moth to a flame with me and big screen super colossal stupendous cinematic extravaganzas.
Once I consider the trojan movie, because, I would have gone. Perhaps I was a little hard on critics with that "hustlers" crack, even if it was true.
Yeah , I went. mehNo complaints, but after paying the tariff to get an Imax seat at the mall, I almost felt justified to crash " Brittany runs a marathon"as the second feature, which I liked better.
Space movie was kind of phony, but in reading that was part of a plan to keep it from being a too perfect, a 2001 type movie.
For my other disappointments, I will point to one, a car chase on the moon, with pirates in pursuit. After seeing Mad Max, they should have cut that scene to save face. About as suspenseful as an old singing cowboy dust up, although they almost pulled it out with the spin out that emphasized the low gravity. That had some "will they make it" excitement.
Other than unrealized high hopes, i have no complaints. However, someone should tell Tommy lee Jones to get some better sleep, he is starting to get bags under his eyes.
