We don't see much of it here, but it is very interesting, starting with his near-silent early ones, and ending in 1940.
They let you see the progression the master made. The Criterion Channel has good collection of that period.

I tried. Very cheap for DVD of those. Like about a buck a film. Multiple movies per disc. Jaimaca Inn, I like this one but the prints are so bad.

  But that is part of their charm. :)
  
  On a serous note - some have amazingly good quality. And I always engage the Subtitles feature, to compensate for sometimes poor sound quality.
