MTM was to me the best situation comedy. It had everything, the Boss, the newsreader, Rhoda, elegant humor and all likable characters. Friends and Seinfeld are silly New York comedy. Just my view.

OR as a friend of mine used to call it, the show about nothing... WAS a bore... I personally don't think Jerry Seinfeld was/is funny.
And who could forget Ted Baxter?
TV generally doesn't hold up quite as well because times change and people have different sensibilities. I was in a movie theater many years ago and 2 older people walked out appalled by the foul language. Interestingly I remember that and can't for the life of me remember the movie.
So like most things ones upbringing will determine what is viewed as funny. A lot of stuff I don't feel holds up as well today. Although I did rewatch some Taxi and I quite enjoyed it. Christopher Lloyd and Danny DeVitio were pretty brilliant.
They are my most watched DVDs.
Fawlty Towers and The Honeymooners are other favorites.
From the MTM days, there were an awful lot of good shows. It was a good time for television.

I still like modern shows but I wonder if it is the subject matter that puts older audiences off - I mean MOM has a lot of raunchy language as it is from, I believe, the same writers as Two and Half Men. Yet I greatly prefer MOM.
At first I thought it would be an age thing but Mom and my grandmother would watch movies like Dawn of the Dead and The Thing and Pulp Fiction and A Clockwork Orange while my father would get up and go into the other room and read a book.
I just watched a new TV Series called The Boys and I thought to myself - this is Breaking Bad with superheroes. It was a hoot and then I thought about the dialog, special effects, production values - compare to what was on when I was a kid it's incomparably superior.
The best shows hold up if the characters hold up - are they well drawn and do we care about them? Louis De Palma to me is one of the greatest characters ever put on screen.

And this is one of my favorite Danny DeVoito scenes - he is conveying a huge array of emotion, lines, physical comedy, stillness, drama.
I saw him in Ordinary People... which IS a great movie and he was great in it!
...that was one of Louie's best scenes. I agree, he was one of the best TV characters ever.
Iggy was not far behind.
Taxi is one of few shows in which every character was engaging ...with the possible exception of Bobby.
I can watch Taxi episodes over, and over and over again.
