Now that many of us are confined to our couches, I am noticing an increase in really bad movies. Today's clunker was "Valerian: City of a Thousand Planets," directed by Luc Besson.
Taken in chronological order, this movie is "Star Wars" meets "Blade Runner" meets "Pirates of the Caribbean" meets "Avatar." And maybe a few more. I don't think there was an original idea in it.
And it cost almost $200 million to make! Grossed only $42 mil in the United States, but made back its cost with $225 mil worldwide.
Sheesh! Why can't they show classics, like "The Deer Hunter"? You never seen that on anymore.

was absolutely stunning, and I must admit this beach scene was something else.
I recently saw her on National Geographic climbing rocks with Bear Grylls. She is quite adventurous in addition to her smashing looks and sincere answers to the questions.
Bill
But she was usually dressed up in some goofy space-policeman outfit, not the fetching ensemble shown here.
CGI, lots of noise, exchangeable and mediocre actors, little or no plot, juvenile dialogue--- they're not even fit for simple popcorn consumption, anymore. 10-year olds love them, of course.
It was Mauvais Sang.

Luc Besson films are always over the top. Sure was purdy, you know.

I don't share your contempt for the common product Any consumer product will have variable quality, but expecting a mass market product to be consistently exceptional is not realistic.I don't pitch a bitch about Stupid TV shows, I accept it as a fact of life. so I try to remain grounded in reality about the need for product in the movie industry, to be intellectually consistent.
One has to separate product from promotion. Most movies hit the screen , make an impact, and are knocked off the screen in a week. Because they sell on promotion, not product. It sounda like your expectations are inflated. Some people read romance novels, I have never cracked one of those popular works, but I am not against them.
The fact that very few movies are ever shown in theatrical release again should temper your disgust with the reality of movies. IF you want to see only good movies, you would have to restrict yourself to a well curated revival or art house.
I like the thrill of the shared experience of a popular movie on a Saturday night. It sometimes makes a poor movie very enjoyable. A you should have been there situation.

based on comic books and superficial myths that most adults stopped reading or caring about when pimples disappeared from their lives. How many Star Trek, Star Wars, Jurassic Pk., and Marvel comic superhero films can a sentient being tolerate? As a matter of fact, I mostly appreciate what some sneeringly describe as "art" films. Certainly, I also enjoy some films purely for their entertainment value, but I find even those are hard to find.
I have to qualify all this by saying I loathe fast food and greasy spoon restaurants, the dining equivalent of most "popular" film fare. Elitist? Proudly so. I'll let others go to Las Vegas and think it "European-like!"
(I wonder how strongly you defend MP3?)

With all the many, many bright colors. I think the problems were with the leads and that it was 90% CGI.
