What's new about endless rehashings and remakes? Or 'cartoon' movies? Or 16 (take your pick) Rambo? or Batman? or Thor? movies?

original screenplays are scarce and I think except for the first couple decades....maybe 1939 was THE year, difficult to source.

It's pretty sad that one of the worst movies EVER made, 'Battlefield Earth' is so funny to me that I'll watch part of it when I see it broadcast. But the endless repeats of a dystopian future don't get me any more (Divergent / Hunger Games)

Even the Sequal to Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Shape Of Water got high regard.

Like Water For Chocolate got 10 (TEN) Ariel Awards (Mexican Oscars) while the 'Academy' completelly ignored 'em.

Look at the numbers. Ticket prices go up, driving incredible salaries while attendance is DOWN by several measures. My theater NOW has 'reserved seats' which means I must plan a day or so ahead if I wish to see a movie. Popcorn? $$$ and with crank case drippin's, not butter.

a Star Wars movie... or something that has beautiful landscapes and cinematography. I guess my point was that "movies" as we knew them are now being released more for the small screen rather than the multiplex. At the same time to your point the prices they charge for a large drink and popcorn ($15.) is ridiculous and especially given the fact that the popcorn is lousy and NOT real butter. I can make it at home... use real butter and have it just the way I like it!

  Business is doubtless changing. Not necessariy for the better, either.
  
  I find myself far from interested in MOST of what Hollyweird is putting out. Yawn. Another (fill in blank) which is a remake, derivative, Unoriginal, or like Psycho, a SCENE FOR SCENE remake of the original.
  People got All Spun Up about 'The Shape Of Water', which, IMO was a sequel to 'The Creature From The Black Lagoon'.......
  
  And yes, Popcorn is COMMODITY CHEAP and soda a tasty sugar delivery system. I'll slip a Hersey Bar in my Manbag before venturing out TO one of those movies.
  
  I DID enjoy 'Knives Out' and also later, JoJo Rabbit, which i thought terrific. 1917 was totally unexpected and also Very Good.
  
  Cinematography and Star Wars? Like Cuisine and Burger King. Want some cinematography?
  Find a copy of 'The Emerald Forest' or 'Excalibur' both by John Borman at the peak of his powers.
  Or some of the real powerhouse scenes in a Hitchcock film.
  Other notable efforts include 'Like Water For Chocolate' or even Apocalypto.

    on the "big" screen... I don't miss the big screen for a picture like Marriage Story or possibly even JoJo Rabbit (even though I have not see it). Star Wars, Raiders, GWTW and etc... NEED to be seen on a big screen. I'm okay with things going smaller as I said it can now cost you easily a hundred dollar bill to go to the movies and a nice dinner...Which is ludicrous! I LOVE Excaliber, one of my favs. I will need to try to get to the theater before 1917 is gone as THAT is one that I would like to see there. I have not seen Like Water For Chocolate OR Apocalypto and since I am a Mel fan that hss been on my radar for quite some time...

ticket prices remain absurdly low (especially if you went during early shows), screens are immense, sound is at all-time best, seats (the new recliner ones) absolutely sota comfort. Yeah, concessions are expensive, but it's like all the extra stuff at restaurants: managers know they can't charge more than 20-30 bucks and entree (been the same for a hell of a long time) so they up the wine/glass price, salads, appetizers, and desserts. You can spend as much, or as little, as you want.

  Ticket prices are roughly keeping pace with inflation.
  
  What HAS changed is viewship numbers. This shows at fairly steady decline since the '40s.
  
  I suspect 1939 was a bumper year with so many movies from that year still being shown.
  
  Including? Gone With The Wind. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Stagecoach. And a bunch others.
  I've seen probably 14 of the top 20 grossing movies from that year. GWTW has grossed a mere 200Million$ which is peanuts by todays inflated standards.
  
  Movie producers go for the 'easy' bucks rather than original or challenging films. You have to go 'indie' for THAT.

    the box office KING. I was actually hoping that the studio would re-release GWTW as it just passed it's 80th anniversary... I would REALLY like to see it on a big screen someday. Doesn't matter to me which is the box office champ is I absolutely LOVE both those films!
