Kill the walk-in screen. People are learning to stay home and stare at the t.v. or computer screen. Sure enough.
I don't think that will happen. People still like to get out, right? The "dinner and a movie" will always be with us in some form or fashion.
Follow Ups:
Free movies using 3 screens and short distance fm transmitters in the parking lot of Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile have been scheduled.
Great way to spend a summer evening with friends.
Unfortunately real estate is too valuable for Drive Inns to be viable anymore. Last few I knew of converted to mult screens at night, and hosted flea markets on Sat/Sun mornings.
Some communities will do a drive in or picnic movie or 2 during the summer months as a diversion.
landscape...There ARE less of them, but some that have been around for years remain and I am sure now are having a resurgent interest. They also have improved the sound capability over the old corded speaker that you hung on your window in the days of old... The one really nice thing about the Drive-in is you can bring in ALL the food and beverage that you want and not pay their exorbitant prices!
Movies, beer, and your favorite handgun for protection! Is this a great country or what?
The latest Pixar seems to be bi-passing the big screen and you
can buy the film and watch it ad nauseam. Only $20 on top of
the subscription fee.
Plop the kids in front of the screen and it's like, well, TV, the ultimate babysitter.
Smart thinking from those corporate crusaders at Disney and THE TIMING IS SUPERB.
"Dinner and a movie" (outside the house) will always be with us in some form or fashion
but will be on hiatus for a while for myriad reasons.
People learned/trained to watch the screen starting a LONG time ago.
I know 5 YO's that are comfortable with smart phones I can't turn on.

I think movie theaters will be around for a long time, but there are big challenges. Home theaters are a large market. Huge TV's are common and audio quality has greatly improved on discs. A number of services offer new films that are in the theaters to the streaming market for a price. A cost savings if there are several viewers.

I hope you are correct. The major market driver in America is the youth, and they won't want to stay home with the parents to watch the latest super hero exploits.
But it could just as easily go to a connected network of friends, much like people messaging each other during sports watching.
Home music got killed with the availability of recorded music. There was a time when every good home required a piano , and at least one female in the household was expected to play the thing. Prosperity was not an excuse to not provide this cultural outlet, back in the days of sheet music bringing the latest hits to the home.
There are still a few large single screen houses in my town, and the presentation is so much better than a mall multiplex , I hope they last forever. Even the famous Chinese theatre was cut up into multiple screens.
