I'd add the superb, "The Interview" to the list, as well as:
"The Wild Pear Tree."
"Kaili Blues."
"Long Days Journey into Night," (the Chinese film, not the O'Neill play).
"An Elephant Sitting Still."
"Ash is Purest White."
These last five are completely original art works...
As good a recommendation as I've gotten off this page in a while. Almost never leaves the interview room but suspense enuf to have been a major studio Oscar winning whodunnit. The suspect and interrogator deserved Oscar nominations for lead and support.

These are brilliant recommendations. I need to give Long Days journey another try. It left me a bit wanting. Wild Pear Tree is excellent and to that I would also add Ceylan's other movies Winter Sleep and my personal favorite Once upon a time in Anatolia.
It helps a bit to have gotten used to the director's very original style first in, "Kaili Blues." Also, LDJIN is set in the same area/town and some characters are the same.The director is a poet and some of his poetry is read during the film. That's a key to enjoying his films: it's all about the feeling and mood that the images, sound, and words convey. He explores the strange area between immediate experience, memory, and dream. A totally unique film style that does take some effort to understand but paradoxically then must be experienced through relaxation of the usual narrative exercise.
There is a split in the film that cleverly occurs in a theater. The film really should be experienced (as I did at a film festival) with 3D glasses: the last hour is one long take done in that medium.
Like "Burning," the brilliant S. Korean film, the films of Bi Gan must be viewed several times.
"Black Coal, Thin Ice" is yet another excellent Chinese film. Lastly, "An Elephant Sitting Still:" more traditional in its storytelling, perhaps, but 4 stories weaved together so cleverly they feel as one.

I saw it twice and couldn't tell if the guy was guilty. He certainly manipulated the examiners at some risk to himself. An expert examiner could have gotten him to reveal some important details if the crime was committed or at least caught him lying.

I know you're a fan of the Danish(?) Funny Games original but give Hanerke's(sp?) scene for scene American remake a chance. Damned, damned, disturbing.
