Banionis was s great actor, the Dead Season was a slightly above average cliche spy film, but if you like him take a look at Nobody Wanted to Die - very good Lithuanian film. You are correct regarding their film history.
Follow Ups:
was offered role of Andrei but took "Hamlet," instead... He had first accepted Bondarchuk's offer, but political connections of "Hamlet"s' director forced the change. Actually, Tikhonov was the fourth choice! Also, for the role of Pierre, Bondarchuk had cast a Russian wrestling champ because he believed Tolstoy's continual insistence on Pierre's great size and its contrast to his immense frame and strength were invaluable. The champ, however, tried acting the role, but decided he wasn't very talented. By default, at the time, Bondarchuk assumed the character.Lastly, if you saw the same director's version of "Boris Godunov," you witnessed him directing his son! (from second marriage)
