My group - a bunch of rock n roll stoners -. My most vivid memory of that summer, anxiously awaiting results of every game. And Janice. But mostly the chess. It was an almost surreal event.

Follow Ups:
I remember watching it broadcast by NY Chess club with live audio commentary from Iceland. We have a move, We have a move was the excited cry of the NY Grandmasters. Especially the one unorthodox move of Knight to Rook4 which Fischer played, a move that had never been played before and Spassky took for ever to reply.

My father and I had a... contentious relationship in those times, but I was visiting him at the time, on his remote ranch (in Brazil) and we played along, moving the pieces as reported by the radio announcer and then spending the day arguing about the moves. Neither one of us were good players, but we had a mutual interest in the game, we studied the various openings until we'd mastered six or seven "basic" ones.
most likely stems from the name of a popular Russian soup, made using leafy part of the beets - hence some jokes, as normally that part is discarded.
Smyslov's name, OTOH, has its root in the word "smysl" meaning reason.
No wonder Smyslov won. :)
